'This material was recorded between midnight and 9 am on the morning of 14th April 2006, on the streets of Seville during the celebration of Semana Santa (Holy Week). These pieces, documenting 'La Madrugá' (the morning of Good Friday), are selected from a series of sound recordings throughout the week of Semana Santa in 2006, which map the winding processions of the 58 Sevillian Catholic fraternities, each with their distinct characteristics. .
This series of recordings forms an informal exploration of some of the specific roles of sound(s) within the complex symbolism of the processions: the knocking of the 'llamador', the shuffling of the feet of the 'costaleros' (the forty or so men who carry the heavy wooden floats bearing images of Christ or the Virgin Mary), the instructions of the 'capataces' whose job is to guide the costaleros' movements through the narrow streets. These are preliminary sketches, or studies, towards the development of multi-channel and installation work.'.
'Este material fue grabado desde la medianoche y las 9 am del 14 de Abril de 2006, en las calles de Sevilla durante la celebracion de la Semana Santa. Estas piezas, documentan 'La Madrugá', y han sido seleccionadas de una serie de grabaciones a lo largo de la Semana Santa del 2006, que concentran las procesiones de 58 hermandades católicas sevillanas, cada una de ellas con sus distintivas caracteristicas. .
Esta serie de grabaciones forman parte de una exploración informal de los diferentes roles de los sonidos en el complejo simbolismo de las procesiones: del 'llamador', el sonido de los pies en el caminar de los 'costaleros', las instrucciones de los 'capataces' cuyo trabajo es guiar a los costaleros en su movimiento a través de las angostas calles. Estos son bocetos preliminares, o estudios, en el desarrollo de una instalación multi-canal.'.
